Bubbles the Hippopotamus

I recently saw this hippo fountain at Laguna Nursery and thought of Bubbles. The story I heard was back in the mid-1970s, a hippopotamus escaped from Lion County
Safari and took up residence in the little lake located on the west side of Laguna Canyon Road. For a time, the wayward hippo eluded capture, staying underwater by
day and emerging only at night. Then one day Bubbles was shot with tranquilizers and died when she fell on her head. RIP Bubbles!

I was a teenager living in Mission Viejo when this happened. I remember it well as Bubbles made international headlines. So sad. I don't know if she fell on her head, but she was tranquilized and fell into an unatural position resulting in suffocation.

I lived in Laguna Beach back in the mid-80's as a young adult. Does anyone remember a 50's diner, Benny The Bums? I was curious what street in downtown Laguna it was on and what business is there now?
