History and beauty come together at Moss Point in Laguna Beach. The mixture of Craftsman and Cape Cod style house at Moss Point was built in 1917, for Col. Henry House, who was the brother of Col. Edward House. Col. Edward House was considered the man most responsible for getting Woodrow Wilson elected as President of the United States. Moss Point is also known for incredible tide pools and scuba diving.

My father, William Lee Marte, was a friend of Colonel House and built this beach cottage for him and his wife. Late in my father’s life, he, my daughters and I toured the home when it was open to the public. At that time we met Constance (Connie) Morthland and dad gave her some of the history and she gave us some. Mr. and Mrs. Morthland own the contiguous property to the east and purchased the property at auction when Colonel and Mrs. House were deceased without heirs and/or devisees and the property escheated to the state of California. I met with Connie from time to time over the years until shortly before her death. The property was rented out to corporate heads and families of means while she managed it. As I recall, the cottage has 10 bedrooms and baths with beautiful manicured grounds. It has spectacular views.
