The City of Laguna Beach Arts Commission installed one of its most ambitious temporary art projects to date. With the assistance of Nathan Mason, Curator of Exhibits and Public Art at the Department of Cultural Affairs for the City of Chicago, renowned sculptor Chakaia Booker installed her sculpture series in Heisler Park.
The works, Gridlock, Take Out, and Pass the Buck have been on temporary display at the Navy Pier in Chicago.

Booker fuses ecological concerns with explorations of racial and economic difference, globalization, and gender by recycling discarded tires into complex assemblages. Tires resonate with her for their versatility and rich range of historical and cultural associations. Booker slices, twists, weaves, and rivets their medium into radically new forms and textures. For her the varied tones of the rubber parallels human diversity, while the tire treads suggest images as varied as African scarification and textile designs. Booker’s works indirectly call attention to slavery and industrial revolution, the working class, and the factory laborer.
