"Grace" is the most recent public art in Laguna Beach created at the new lifeguard HQ at Main Beach.5/18/2014 "Grace", is the most recent public art commissioned for Laguna Beach at the newly constructed lifeguard headquarters at Main Beach. Terry Thornsley created this bronze, copper and stainless steel mural that includes two figures rowing a dory through churning seas. We will stop at this impressive piece on my Heisler Park/ Downtown Tour. Go to www.LagunaBeachWalks.com to purchase tickets for this fun and engaging two-hour walking tour.

Summer banners are up! Over 70 banners with original art work on display through Labor Day5/16/2014 Summer banners are up! In 1982, the Laguna Beach Arts Commission started an annual banner competition. Now we have over 70 banners with original art work (4' x 16') displayed all over town. The 2014 banner winners can be seen at Main Beach through Labor Day.
Walking around Heisler Park, I usually see a plein air painter doing their thing. En plein air in French means "in open air". You can also describe this as peinture sur le motif , which means "painting on the ground". For more events and workshops in Laguna Beach, en plein air, go to LPAPA.org (Laguna Plein Air Painters Association).
Flashback Friday! Laguna Beach High School was established in 1934 with the "Breakers" as their mascot. In 1936, they changed to the "Artists" to recognize the city's artistic roots. In 2003, the student body decided to change back to the "Breakers".
The Deck restaurant has a killer view with live music Monday - Thursday from 5-9pm. Come on my HIP District Tour tonight, and we will pop our heads into this place to check out the scene. Walk with me from 5-7pm, learn about Laguna Beach, and get your exercise on. Tickets still available at www.LagunaBeachWalks.com.
Ok folks, here is your schedule for later this week:
Wednesday - My HIP District tour 5-7pm (go to my website to purchase tickets) Thursday - First Thursdays Art Walk 6-9pm Friday - Sunset Serenades at Heisler Park - 6:30pm til sunset (FREE! bring your wine, cheese/crackers and a blanket) Saturday - Zero Trash 1st Saturday Community Clean Up 10am - meet at El Ranchito to grab your picker and let's make Laguna Beach spotless! Saturday night ... Any suggestions? Thanks and see you around town! The goddess of St. Ann's is looking for waves! She is to the right as you are descending the stairs. St. Ann's beach is south of Main Beach and is a popular surf spot. Be careful of rip tides in this area and if you get caught in one, swim parallel to the shore to get out of it. We stroll by St. Ann's beach on my HIP District tour (above the beach, we don't get in the sand).
Have you ever been to Jahraus Park in Laguna Beach? If you come on my Heisler Park / Downtown tour you will see it. "Deer Warrior" is there looking a little scary or protective? "Boy and Dog" is there with a drinking fountain in the back for the boy and one in the front for the dog. Mr. Jahraus is famous for saving Heisler Park from development. When you do something like that, you get your own park!
Bette Davis's California English Tudor home in Wood's Cove is another must-see attraction in Laguna Beach. It was built in 1929, is a registered historic structure, and still has the "D" on the chimney. It is located off of Diamond Street at 1991 Ocean Way. In 1957 Bette was scheduled to appear in the Pageant of the Masters, but an injury forced her to cancel last minute.
How many Lifeguard Towers can you find in Laguna Beach? This top landmark is everywhere from Laguna Beach Books, to Cottage Furnishings, to Main Beach. Read my blog on LagunaBeach.com for more sightings. http://lagunabeach.com/aroundtown/the-laguna-beach-lifeguard-tower-top-landmark-in-town/
